I was reading an article about the Virginia primary results when I came across this.

And 49 percent of those who voted for Obama were white, a big change from previous contests in which Clinton held a big lead over Obama among white Democrats.

“We haven’t seen that happen this strikingly before, and this in a Southern state,” said CNN senior political analyst Bill Schneider.

What exactly is your point Mr. Schneider? As a senior political advisor you must be aware that Virginia was the first state (southern or not) to elect an African American governor. Guess what, we’re not all backward racist hicks.

For the record, the most racist place I have ever visited (and I mean scary racist) was Connecticut. I believe that is a northern state. ‘Course I haven’t been learned that well so I might be wrong.

  1. You are so right! The rest of the country persists in believing that we in the South (I’m in Georgia) are slow and racist and somewhat backwards. Once, we had a visitor from Chicago ask us “Are there black people here [in Georgia]?” In all seriousness! Because he thought that Georgians were too completely racist to allow non-whiteys to live in our state. This was a fairly “educated” person who asked this question! When I pointed out that, um, yes, this was America, and there were people of all types living here in our little hillbilly state, he was somewhat surprised.

I’ve lived in New England, the Midwest, and the South (and Texas!). There are idiots EVERYWHERE. Sad, but true. But usually the New England and Midwestern idiots think that the only idiots live in the South. Crazy.

  2. Yes, idiots everywhere. I think it’s funny when I read blogs by people complaining about predjudice then the next entry they make fun of southern hicks. Or I can make fun of rednecks and everyone agrees and joins in. Then they don’t say a word about a post like this.

Also, I think the idiots in the south are just more vocal about it. At least they’re honest.

  3. Didn’t you mean to say, “I ain’t been learned that well…” Hehe.

Yeah, for UNITED States, we sure do hold a lot of regional stereotypes and prejudices. It’s ridiculous. You think CT is racist? Try living in Vermont. Here every Asian is Chinese, and if you’re Mexican (American) they’ll just call you taco or burrito. Unfortunately racism is alive and (un)well in all 50 states–north, south, east & west.

  4. Sorry. I forgot a teacher read my blog. I’ll do better next time.

I’ve never been to Vermont. No reason not to go except I haven’t had a reason to go. I think stereotyping and prejudice tends to be a side-effect of having logical brains. We sort and classify things without even thinking about it. If it reaches the point of hate and becoming hurtful or harmful to others then we need to change. I think that applies to race, sex, religion, etc. Calling people burrito is just stupid.

When I was a kid all Asians were Chinese and you had to be nice to them because if you dishonored them they would kill themselves! Now that Northern VA is high tech they are all Japanese and they are really really smart. Things change yet they stay the same.

Another thing I’ve noticed is the migrant workers were hated when I was a kid. “dirty wet-backs living 20 to a house” Now they have started to buy homes and start their own businesses and people aren’t as critical. “They’re mostly good people just trying to make a life for their families” Some things change for the better. It just takes too long.
