If you read my Growing Potatoes post you know I’ve been growing potatoes in a trashcan. It the time of year to harvest them. The girls and I had so much fun dumping them out and sifting through the dirt. They would yell – We hit the jackpot! – when they found a long root with lots of potatoes attached. The grubs and earthworms were welcome extras.

This is what we got:

It wasn’t a bumper crop by any means but I was pleased.

Some of the potatoes turned out a little small:

Some of them turned out a little weird:

All in all, I would recommend growing potatoes in a trash can. They require very little work and are fun to harvest. I am definitely going to try again next year. But, I’ll do a few things differently.
.

I need to plant them earlier so they will grow bigger
I am going to plant fewer plants in the trashcan so they can spread out.
I need to get at least one more trashcan to grow potatoes in. Anything that fun deserves to be done twice.

  1. I thought of gingers too. They were yummy. Very sweet and good. yes, give it a try. It was so fun and easy.

My garden didn’t do well either. Just a bad year. I would of laughed so hard to see that picture of poop happens. I’m laughing now just thinking about it.

  2. THAT is fantastic! they reminded me of gingers-the shape etc….. yeah, i’d imagine they needed to be spaced out more but smaller things tend to be delicious! something about quality versus quantity…..
wow! i want to try this out next spring!
my garden didn’t do so well except for my killer chillis and herbs, tomatos…etc…still trying to figure out the soil….but me neighbour gave us over 4 tons of horse manure….heheheheh! it was the happiest sh- that we’ve ever encountered! i wanted to half bury meself and take a picture saying” poop happens and it’s goooood!”
