I’m a Reformed Frog Killer

March 7th, 2008

My youngest has been on an environmental bent the last few months. Her new purpose in life is to save the frogs. They are born deformed and even dying because of too much pollution. She has become quite the activist.

Reusable Shopping Bag from giantfood.comShe has a T-shirt with a recycle sign on the front that she wears everywhere. She’ll leave her jacket open and walk around with her chest poked out so everyone will see it and remember to recycle. She has also given a stern lecture to the bag boy at the supermarket. He should be making people get reusable bags instead of letting them harm the environment with plastic. He looked very amused.

One day I forgot to take my reusable shopping bags to the store and I was lectured the whole way home about both the toxicity of plastic and the danger of killing trees. “…The only option is to reuse mom. It’s very important unless you want to kill frogs. And Turtles! You don’t want to kill turtles…” I begged forgiveness and she decided to let me off the hook; as long as it didn’t happen again.

When her dad got home she put on her worried face and ratted me out on my murder of innocent frogs. He told her about all the things I do that is good for the environment. When he was done I was the poster child for healthy happy frogs. I have probably saved hundreds if not thousand of little froggy lives. She thinks I am the patron saint of frogs. It feels good to be a hero.

So, if you aren’t already using reusable shopping bags, go get some. It’s really a small price to pay to save a life. You don’t want to be a frog murderer. Choose to be a hero.

I want to be a hero, but i do so like murdering frogs.

    Oh ok, just for you.

Actually i’ve started using re-usable bags a lot more recently. I fill them with bricks then hit frogs with them.

I’m in a strange mood today. i’m sorry.

You don’t have to apologize. Your mood is making me giggle.

Alright, did your daughter put you up to this post? What is she promising for this little bit of “airtime”? A clean room, maybe or a week of washing the dishes?

Okay, I admit it. I live in Vermont, and I’ve become a tree-hugging, frog-loving *cringe* environmentalist. My shopping bags are made from recycled plastic bottles. So there.

My supermarket has just started selling what they call ‘bags for life’ for 12p, to cut down on plastic. They’re much thicker, reusable bags also made of plastic.

Last time I was there I was in line behind a retired couple. They we’re grumbling and bitching at each other about every last little thing as people tend to do here, like “‘av you got the butter” “Ooh, ‘eck no, there’s butter at home, if you care to look” “Alright, alright, was you who forgot it last time..” etc etc.

Then the checkout girl asked “Would you like a ‘bag for life’?” and the man piped up “Ooh, ‘eck no love, I’ve already got one!”

    Awesome.

I should add that it’s just a British thing. You could totally tell that they snuggle during Antiques Roadshow and will die within three days of each other.

    :)

Beloved - My daughter will be very proud of you. I once tried to knit a rug out of plastic bags that I cut into strips and tied together. It didn’t work as well as I thought it would.

Amelia - What a great story! I know exactly what you’re talking about. My FIL cousin and her husband are in Scotland and when we visited them I spent half my time with a wry smile. They were so funny.

I never connected frogs to recycling, but you have a point. I have always loved frogs!
