It explains the problems with blog rolls very well. I knew exactly what you were talking about. The only problem with sharing items is the links don't show up in technorati. I think a lot of people like to have the link count. I've been trying to do occassional thank you posts where I link to some of the people I've shared items from. I've been having a lot of fun with those and I think they're more meaningful than just a link in a blog roll. Social blogging is very complicated...but fun!
