Parent Hackfire
This is for the contest at Parent Hacks I’m not sure if this rates in the funny category, but with a major appliance, messy rooms, and my kids being smarter than myself involved I suppose it’s worth a try.We had a terrible event happen at our house.
While blindly vacuuming under the couch, I accidentally sucked up Barbie’s wedding dress. I managed to finally fish it out of the vacuum and return it to almost pristine condition, but Barbie isn’t gonna be wearing white anytime soon.
Fast-forward a few months…The kids’ room is a mess. I asked them to clean it up. No response. I demanded they clean it up. Half hearted OK moms. I finally yell, “I’m going in there in 30 minutes with the vacuum cleaner. Anything that’s left on the floor is gonna get sucked up!” The girls jump into action. They look closely at the vacuum cleaner. Almost too closely. I feel smug. They realize me and my vacuum mean business!
About two minutes later they come back out of their room. “No, no way!” I say, “You two did not clean up your rooms that fast. Get back in there and don’t come out until it’s done.” They look at my like I’m crazy. “Mom, we did too pick up our room. We picked up everything. Everything that can fit into the vacuum.”
That was the day I realized clean rooms weren’t all that important and I needed to get a bigger vacuum.
Thanks for giving me the oportunity. I enjoyed writing that up.
Brilliant! Your kids, that is. Man — they outsmart us at every turn. Thanks for sharing.
